PRACTICAL LIFE EXERCISES

Children love to imitate the adults in their lives.  Their confidence grows when they are able to do some of the activities their own parents and grandparents do.  Practical Life exercises are activities where children can practice some of these skills, such as table washing, egg beating, dish washing, and clothes pinning.  Children love to act “grown up.”

Practical Life exercises are done both indoors and outdoors, and can be large activities or small.  Many of the exercises involve the use of water.  Water is soothing to the senses, to feel, watch, and hear.  Practical Life activities strengthen children’s abilities to follow directions, concentrate, and develop large and fine motor skills.  Watching the teacher demonstrate an activity helps the child become a keen observer.  Choosing the activity, setting it up, completing it, and putting it away helps the child develop stamina and perseverance.  Carrying water in a pitcher and pouring it into a bowl help strengthen coordination.  We know that when a child can focus on practical life activities, he is gaining the necessary skills for future learning.
